Join us as we explore sport as an enabler of sustainable development in SIDS, in line with the recognition of it as such in Agenda 2030 and the Zero Draft Outcome Document of SIDS4. This session will showcase sport’s ability to enhance social and human capital, especially in relation to health, education and employment opportunities for youth.
Looking forwards to the development of a UNESCO policy on Sport and SIDS our panel event will set out linkages between sport and human rights and sustainable development with a view to identifying policy priorities where sport can contribute to positive societal outcomes SIDS. Ongoing work with UNESCO and development banks on social outcomes investing through sport and its applicability to SIDS will be referenced. We will draw on research ongoing between Ireland and Mauritius on developing evidence-based policy initiatives to harness sport across policy domains in line with national human rights commitments. This work is building towards the creation of a UNESCO hub on SIDS and Sport with centres of excellence across the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific regions. Ireland’s UNESCO Chair in Inclusive Sport is central to mobilising this work.

She grows excited when she talks about her days as a basketball player in Haryana, the state she once represented. But shortly Ritu regains confidence to lead a normal respectful life with dreams of playing basketball for her state. Picture clicks at ‘Sheroes Hangout’ Café in Agra, India.
